Come Along Now, Follow Me

[SERMON] - June 30, 2019
3rd SUNDAY after PENTECOST

In our baptismal covenant, we vow to respect the dignity of every human being. Those who have come seeking our help are our fellow humans. Many of them are not entering the country illegally, but through the official asylum seeking process, and yet children are separated from parents and given a concrete floor to sleep on. This, my friends, is not gospel. This is not the good news.

It Is Well With My Soul

[SERMON] - MARCH 30, 2018

GOOD FRIDAY

A few years ago, I climbed atop my Nana’s bed and talked with her about death. Though hospice bustled around her and her energy waned, she told me she wasn’t afraid. As I laid next to her, I began singing the old hymn It Is Well With My Soul.

Nothing On Our Tongues But Hallelujah

[SERMON] - November 13, 2016
26th Sunday After Pentecost

Somewhere in the space between when Tuesday ended and Wednesday began, a great exchange of breath took place. Millions let out a deep exhale of relief, while millions more drew in a sharp intake of air.

Hellfire and Popsicles

[SERMON] - September 25, 2016
19th SUNDAY after PENTECOST

We've talked a bit among the clergy here at Christ Church about sermon titles. As in, "Should we use them and publicize them in advance?" I've given that some thought, wondering what my sermon title this week might be.

Darkness to Light

[SERMON] - April 15, 2017
Great Vigil of Easter

Here we stand on the great precipice. In one direction is darkness and in the other is light. We are teetering between Good Friday and Easter, between grief and jubilation, between death and life. And this Easter Vigil contains it all.

Finding Wholeness in Community

[SERMON] - May 1, 2016
Sixth Sunday of Easter

As a parent of two young children, I make many trips to the public library and I read many children’s books. I can be a bit of a children’s book snob, picking what appears to be a high-brow picture book based on the inclusion of a Caldecott or Newbury award sticker, or by literally judging a book by its cover and choosing the ones with the best illustrations.

Replacing Our Armor

[SERMON] - August 23, 2015
13th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Not being what you might call a natural born warrior, I had a difficult time trying to imagine putting on the armor of God described in today’s passage from the letter to the Ephesians.

Weep

[Podcast] - Lent 2018
Week 7

Before the resurrecting and the proclaiming his identity and power, Jesus began to weep for a man he loved who had died.

Weeping and rejoicing. Resurrection and life. Holy Week and Easter. All of these are bound up together in our story.
